Joe Gulla’s One Man Show Proves He’s the Dude You Wanna Have a Drink With

The NYC-based playwright and actor, Joe Gulla, is back on stage with a one-man show that will make you contemplate gay life – especially how meaningful, fun and ridiculous it can be. Joe Gulla will be performing his award-winning show, Faggy at 50, this weekend at Joe’s Pub, the live music venue at The Public Theater in New York City. Faggy at 50 is this Sunday, July 30. If you live in the area, you can get tickets to the online by clicking here.

“I hated being called a fag when I was a kid. Nothing hurt worse.”

“I hated being called a fag when I was a kid. Nothing hurt worse,” Joe told me in an email about the show. Now, he’s learned to reclaim the term.

“It takes a real man to come out of the closet,” he said. “In the face of hate, in the face of ignorance, in the face of real-life threat, coming out is the least faggy thing a gay man will ever do.”

Faggy at 50 is Joe’s exploration of what it means to be a fifty-year-old gay man and all the experiences he has lived through. Joe’s danced at Studio 54 and he was at the first-ever Broadway Bares event at Splash nightclub. He’s hung out with Basquiat and been hit on by porn legend, Joey Stefano. Joe is definitely the guy you want to have a drink with. But it hasn’t all been glitter and disco balls. Joe also lived through the AIDS epidemic.

“I cried often and lived in fear… unable to process the horror and suffering in the wake of AIDS’ devastation,” he told me.

Faggy at 50 captures all of that. Joe describes his show as both serious and funny, akin to Larry Kramer’s Faggots with a tinge of John Leguizamo’s Spic-O-Rama. Faggy at 50 was awarded “Best One Man Show” at the 2014 United Solo Awards when it debuted. So, don’t miss your chance to see it for yourself this Sunday.

The show is a sequel to Joe Gulla’s The Bronx Queen and a prequel to Daddy, so there’s more material where this came from. In the meantime, don’t forget to follow Joe on Instagram to get all his latest updates.
