NSFW: Rare Uncensored Photos of Studio 54

A glittery, pulsating discotheque so famously fun that Andy Warhol literally had nightmares about getting rejected: that’s was Studio 54.
Swedish photographer Hasse Persson was Studio 54’s resident shutterbug, and in his latest photo art book, simply titled Studio 54, he unveils some of his most striking black and white photographs taken at the disco club during its heyday in the late 70’s.

Studio 54 was started by two gay entrepreneurs, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, and it was frequented by the likes of Warhol, Michael Jackson, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Divine and Mick Jagger. Although the lines to get in were always rowdy and long, some would call it a total clusterfuck, Studio 54 was not exclusively a playground for dazed-out celebs and scantly-clad socialites, however. The notorious nightclub also drew a colorful cast of characters of all races, gender identities and sexual orientations.

Even though Studio 54 was only open for three years, that was long enough for Persson to capture a lifetime of debauchery with his signature take on flash and long exposure. Persson’s Studio 54 art book marks the first publication of these rare NSFW photos taken at the legendary nightclub: a hedonistic wonderland, too fun to last.

  • Great pictures. Thanks so much for posting. I respectfully would like to suggest that you make one correction. Studio 54 was started by 1 gay man. Ian Schrager is not gay.
