Were These S.F. Drag Queens Cast on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’?

Long live S.F. drag queens!
A few weeks ago I read a Secret about a local drag queen embarking on the 7th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Welcome to San Francisco.

If I had to guess, I would say that Mahlae Balenciaga is bound for reality TV greatness. The editors of Dragaholic seem to agree. The host of the weekly Drag Race viewing parties at The Cafe is a natural onstage, and she can work a crowd like no one’s business.

Fueling rumors of her selection on Drag Race are some recent Instagram photos of Balenciaga “vacationing” in “Cabo,” which coincide perfectly with the current filming of the upcoming season. Drag Race queens are held under a tight confidentiality agreement, especially on social media. So whenever a rumored queen starts posting random vacation photos in mid-July, you know something’s up.

Then came more word of mouth that there wasn’t just going to be one San Francisco queen in season 7 — but two! Surprisingly enough, Dragaholic’s second “most-likely” candidate is another local sensation: Grace Towers.

Towers is a fierce, fashion-forward bearded queen, and it totally makes sense that RuPaul and her producers would want to acknowledge the recent fascination with bearded lady queens, especially after last season’s gender-player Milk became a fan favorite and Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision contest . However, her Instagram feed seems to place Towers firmly in San Francisco, doing shows with Peaches Christ and the like. Maybe the world will be ready for the first bearded Drag Race contestant come season 8.

Do you have any info about which queens are currently taping Drag Race season 7?

  • Umm…. Maybe before you post crazy speculation you should look into things a little further. RPDR started filming last week (Was confirmed by multiple sources including previous contestants Morgan, Pandora, and Mariah) and it doesn’t take any amount of sleuthing to see that both Grace and Mahlae are still in the city performing. Neither are on the show.
