[dropcap background=”yes” color=”#333333″ size=”50px”]G[/dropcap]ore Vidal once said, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
If this definition holds any truth, then it’s appropriate that Rihanna has been crowned the ultimate epitome of it.
On Monday, the pop singer showed up at the CFDA Awards in New York to accept the Style Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The fashion risk-taker walked the red carpet drenched in 216,000 Swarovski crystals and little else. Her splendid dress, a custom design by Adam Selman, grabbed all the headlines, but it was her lack of clothing at the otherwise stuffy gala that really made an impression.
In our wardrobe malfunction-weary era, the fun-loving singer was unapologetic about displaying her body. It’s groundbreaking, in a way, to see a woman of such high profile having this much fun shattering traditional norms of conduct.
Images of a woman’s naked body, whether on Instagram or Vogue, are instantly flagged and censored because of our misogynistic notion that a woman only chooses to display her body for the sole purpose of titillating men.
There is nothing inherently sexual or obscene about Rihanna’s nipples (especially considering she was in a room full of male fashion designers…), and she alone has the right to say where and when they can be seen and by whom. For Rihanna, the answers are everywhere, anytime and by everyone — so power to huh!
Have an issue over a women’s freedom to wear revealing outfits? Not her problem.
She will be heard! Her nipples will be seen!
And whatever you say will never take away from the fact that she looked fucking fly.
Sorry, she’s not sorry.
She’s a grown ass woman. She will wear whatever she wants.
Drink all the champagne in the world if she wants to.
Twerk on random tables for the whole world to see.
And there’s nothing you can do to stop her.
