Jonathan Groff on Dating Fellow Actors and Saying No to Grindr

I chatted with Jonathan Groff for a quick second during the Looking premiere at the Castro Theater this week. I made him laugh, I made him think, I made him blush. Check it what he had to say about online dating, embracing feminine qualities and why he never karaokes.
What’s this about you hating karaoke?
It’s not that I hate it, it’s just that I’m not very good at it. [While shooting in SF] we used to go to The Mint all the time, that was our spot, and I never got up to sing. I couldn’t. I just start thinking about the arrangement, what key I should sing it in. I overthink it.

That’s the worst thing you can do.
Exactly.

Do you think your character Patrick would ever get onstage an sing at The Mint.
If he has enough drinks in him. I wonder if he has a good singing voice..

Something tells me that he does.
What would he sing?

Maybe Lorde?
[Laughs] That’s a good one. I’ll have to tell [co-executive producer] Michael [Lannan] about that one.

Patrick plays video games as the female character and he’s very proud about it. Is he a feminist?
It’s very interesting that you ask that. [Director] Andrew [Haigh] wanted that conversation to not be about making it a statement and delivered more matter of fact. So that audiences can interpret it their own way. Patrick is very comfortable with his sexuality in that aspect and he is not afraid to embrace some of his more feminine qualities.

He is also very dorky.
Yeah, that is part of his charm, I think. It was fun playing someone that does not always have a smooth way out of an awkward situation.

And he loves OkCupid.
Yes, in the first episode he goest out on a bad date with someone from OkCupid. I don’t know if it’s that he loves OkCupid but more that he thinks it’s the only way he’ll meet the type of guy he thinks he should be with.

I assume it must be difficult for actors to go online dating. Have you ever gone on OkCupid or Grindr?
No, I’ve never done it and I never will.

Never?
Well, never say never, I guess. But I don’t think I’d be good at it.

Someone should start an online dating site just for famous actors.
That’s the worst idea ever. Actors dating actors is so boring.
