Dark Dolls: Mariel Clayton’s ‘Forty-Nine Rooms’ Subverts the Barbie Fantasy


Mariel Clayton’s Forty-Nine Rooms photo series plays up the fucked-up societal expectations as they affect America’s most looked-up-to power couple, Barbie and Ken.

Femininity explores a cross-dressing Ken, Intimacy has Barbie using the toilet in front of her lover, and Equality features a gay Ken rightly tossing a beer bottle at his husband’s head (while watching a Pride parade on TV).
